Got Braces? Here’s How to Keep Your Tooth Enamel Strong

Posted .

Braces are handy appliances that can give you the smile of your dreams. However, if you’re not careful and take good care of your smile, you could suffer the consequences, and one of those consequences is soft enamel. So, it’s important to do all you can to maintain strong enamel when you have braces in Johns Creek, Georgia, and our orthodontist, Dr. John Fleming, would like to help you do so by giving you the tips you need.

First, have a tooth-friendly diet. This isn’t as tough as it might sound. All you need to do is avoid sugary and acidic foods and drinks, like candy, soda, tomatoes, and more, and consume products that are high in calcium and healthy for your smile, like dairy products and milk.

Second, avoid over brushing your smile. This is important because brushing too often and too hard can wear down the tooth enamel. So, make sure to follow your orthodontist’s brushing instructions and use gentle, soft techniques as you scrub. It’s also important to use a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Third, use fluoride often. Fluoride is essential for strong tooth enamel. It’s a natural mineral that strengthens the teeth. You need to expose your smile to fluoride often by brushing with fluoride toothpaste, rinsing with fluoride mouthwash, receiving a professional fluoride treatment at your dental office regularly, and drinking fluoridated water.
