How to Have a Positive Relationship with Your Braces

Posted .

If you want a successful orthodontic experience, then it’s best to have a positive relationship with your braces. To help you develop that relationship, our Quality Orthodontic Care team recommends that you do the following things:

Floss: Flossing cleans the spaces between your teeth and prevents gum disease, which is why it’s best to floss at least once a day. However, flossing with braces might be a little bit difficult. So, if you need help flossing, talk to your orthodontist and ask for a floss threader.

Avoid eating sticky or hard foods: Sticky and hard foods can easily break your brackets and wires, which is why it’s best to avoid eating them altogether. Some common products that tend to break the appliance are caramel, toffee, taffy, and gummy candies.

Chew with your back teeth: If you use your front teeth to bite into foods, like apples and hamburgers, there is a high chance that your front brackets and wires will break as you bite. So, it’s best to cut hard-to-eat foods into small pieces and pop them into the back of your mouth, using the back teeth to chew.

Wear rubber bands and headgear: Even though rubber bands and headgear can be extremely annoying, it’s recommended to wear them at the suggested times. If you ignore the guidance and refuse to wear these parts of your appliance, then there is a good chance that your treatment time will be increased by months.

If you do these things, your braces will most likely stay in tip-top shape and you will be on the right track toward your beautiful smile.
