Invisalign®: An Overview

Posted .

If you are considering straightening your smile with an alternative system to traditional braces, you might consider looking into Invisalign®. Instead of brackets and wires and bands, you will be using removable plastic aligners 20 to 22 hours a day to gradually shift your teeth into alignment.

By using predictable, controlled tooth movements, with Invisalign you will be seeing our orthodontist every 4-6 weeks to monitor your progress. Because the aligners are clear, they are popular both for teens and adults since they are practically invisible.

Your oral hygiene habits don’t change with Invisalign since you take the aligners out to clean your teeth. This allows you to maintain your current brushing (twice a day), flossing and rinsing routine to remove plaque and keep out cavities and gingivitis.

When it comes to meals, you take off your aligners (please don’t lose them!) and you can consume your normal diet. While there are no food restrictions with Invisalign, you still want to avoid or limit hard, sticky, acidic and overly sweet foods which can harm tooth enamel.

When you engage in sports, the aligners won’t harm oral tissues like brackets and wires. Even so, if you need to wear a mouthguard during high impact activities, you can remove the aligners during this time, and put them back on afterward.

As for your bedtime routine, be sure to clean your aligners thoroughly after the days wear. You can use the Invisalign cleaning kit or brush and rinse the aligners well. And that’s it!
