Proper Oral Hygiene Routine When You Have Braces

Posted .

Oral hygiene is vital for your oral health, and it’s even more important when you have braces. The reason is because if you don’t properly clean your teeth and braces regularly, your smile can be vulnerable to major dental problems. These problems can be painful and inconvenient and they can also prolong your treatment process. So, please keep up on oral hygiene while you have braces. To help you do so, Dr. John Fleming has some helpful guidelines.

It’s strongly recommended to brush your teeth after you eat each meal and snack. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste as you brush. Brushing might prove to be a bit difficult, and if this is the case, use an interdental brush to clean hard-to-reach areas around your braces.

We also recommend flossing your teeth at least once a day. However, we encourage flossing after you eat, just like brushing. This is important because it can remove food particles from your smile that your brush couldn’t reach. This can help you maintain clean teeth as well as avoid having a food-filled smile. As you floss, use the floss threader we gave you. Using it can make flossing a little easier.

Lastly, recommend rinsing your mouth with a fluoride or antibacterial mouthwash daily. Rinsing can help you clean the areas both your toothbrush and floss couldn’t clean. It can also freshen your breath.
